I am doing a Beth Moore study with a couple of friends called Breaking Free (unbelievable and awesome) and she was talking on her video the other night discussing this verse:
"One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, 'Of all the commandments, which is the most important?' 'The most important one is this', he answered, Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these' " (Mark 12:28-32).
WOW! I thought, "If do nothing else but LOVE my God then I got it!"
Then it sunk in even deeper this morning when I read, "If you carefully observe all these commands I am giving you to follow, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways and to hold fast to him, then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you" (Deuteronomy 11:22).
Do you notice that Love the LORD your God is first in everything? It comes before loving your neighbor, walking in his ways, holding fast to him - it comes before anything. Yet, I could still hear my heart say instantly, but Lord... but we have to... but... but... but... I can even hear some of you saying but wait, don't we have to... but the Word says we need to do a little of this, or a little of that...
I realized I am so prone to humanize my God and become so use to having a system, or a set of rules or some kind of structure to follow. After all, how do you put anything together without instructions? Well, Jesus can and does put us together with His Word and His Love so let me tell us all something about all our "buts":
But you know we're supposed to pray...
Love will bring you to your knees
But we gotta go to church...
Love will lead you where you're supposed to be, when you're supposed to be there
But we can't love the Lord and not serve others...
Love will serve up a storm
Love washed another's feet
But you know the Word tells us, "wives submit to your husbands as unto Christ"...
Love will teach you that you are ultimately trusting and submitting to Christ and His authority
But the Word says, "husbands love your wives as Christ loves the church"...
Love covered a multitude of sins so husbands are capable of loving their wives with such power
Love does it all! Love does the loving
LOVE said, "It is finished" (John 19:30)
LOVE did all the work so I don't have to.
If I do nothing but love the LORD my God with ALL my heart, ALL my soul, ALL my mind and ALL my strength. LOVE will do the rest!
LORD, help me to stop living within rules and regulations, standards and systems, expectations and conditions. Help me to stop living on performance-based love and to simply LOVE you with my whole heart, soul and mind.
