The woman was surprised… (John 4:9)
Are you ever surprised by the thought of Jesus speaking to you? Have you ever felt like you heard the whispers of the Holy Spirit from within you and felt surprised? "Who me? Are you talking to me? Why would You talk to me?"
It was the same with the sinful, Samaritan woman. She could not fathom what this Man, whom she did not know, nor did she recognize at the time, was doing talking to her.
First, she was a woman.
Second, she was a Samaritan. Jews hated Samaritans.
Third, she was considered sinful. Married 5 times, currently living with another man.
Finally, she and Jesus were in public.
Oh how a woman’s mind just takes off like a freight train and races down the track of lies and doubt the enemy throws out to us. How often do we run through a laundry list of what is wrong with us before we approach our Savior? How often do we give a whole bunch of excuses for why He couldn’t possibly love us, let alone want to talk to us?
If those kinds of questions run through your mind, you can know for certain they are not running through the heart and mind of JESUS! Those thoughts, which are in essence doubts and insecurities, lead us to a god that is too small. A god that has no power. A god that is a made up idol, probably formed in our imaginations from the life we lived, or didn’t live, with our earthly fathers. Dear sister, don’t believe the lies.
GOD is BIG! GOD is all POWERFUL! GOD is ALIVE! GOD is our ultimate FATHER, and GOD loves you! YES, YOU! So much so that He sent His one and only Son, JESUS, from glory to a sin-filled world, to come and talk to YOU!
What was Jesus doing? What was He thinking? JESUS was saving a group of people into His Kingdom. JESUS was thinking of how much He loved this woman and had to be about His Father’s business to share the Good News with her. You see…
LOVE makes everyone eligible.
LOVE destroys hate.
LOVE washes away sin.
LOVE doesn’t care where you are.
LOVE wins!
How grateful should we be that we can never out sin the LOVE of JESUS? We can never out run the LOVE of JESUS? How grateful should we be that JESUS will come to us wherever we are, in whatever we are in and talk to us. LOVE will ask for a drink (v. 7), not so much because thirst is on His mind, but because your thirst is on His heart. LOVE will start the conversation that quenches your every thirst!
LOVE wants to talk to you!
My LORD, how beautiful is your LOVE for us! How satisfying is your LOVE for us! Quench our thirst JESUS and never let us run dry again! You are worthy!
